New Lynn Interchange
New Lynn Redevelopment | Plans For Trains And Buses | Further Information | Station Design

New Lynn station is one of the busiest stations on Auckland’s rail network, and with projected population growth in the region, the station will be an important hub in Auckland’s transport network. Its development   will allow for more frequent and reliable passenger services and will aim to improve pedestrian safety and traffic flow around the rail network.

The rail station is part of an integrated bus and train transport interchange at the junction of Clark St, Totara Avenue and Memorial Drive in New Lynn.

Please click here to view a video fly-through of what the station will look like.

ARTA is responsible for funding and managing the rail station component, while Waitakere City Council is  responsible for the adjacent bus interchange.

General Works Update:

The 'big dig' is complete! Work on the station inside the trench is well underway, with good progress being made on the platform, stairs, art panels and other components.

Planned for 2010

A temporary station in the trench and finished track foundations is planned to be completed for the first train to run through the trench on March 1st 2010.

The new station is expected to be completed around September this year.

There will occasionally be changes to pedestrian access to the temporary station on Totara Ave while works continue, but all changes will be well signposted, so please use the marked pathways.

Plans For Trains And Buses

Plans for Trains:

  • ARTA is continuing to work with ONTRACK to upgrade the region’s rail network to provide more frequent and reliable train services in the region.
  • The completion of the New Lynn works is part of the wider double tracking works on the section of the Western Line between Avondale and Titirangi Road. The current single track and short platform restrict train frequency and reliability, and the track cuts right through the heart of New Lynn town centre. To address this problem, New Lynn station and tracks will be rebuilt in a rail trench.
  • On completion of these construction works and delivery of additional rolling stock by ARTA, Western Line peak services will be increased to run every 10 minutes and more late night and weekend rail services will be provided.
  • While construction is being undertaken, temporary platforms are being provided at New Lynn.
  • ARTA’s electrification programme is now underway.

Plans for Buses:

  • The New Lynn interchange will provide for convenient and comfortable connections between trains and buses.
  • Restructuring the bus network to complement the investment in Auckland’s rail network will be a primary focus for ARTA over the next two to three years. The new bus network will be much simpler and easier to understand than the current network.
  • There will be fewer bus routes, but they will generally operate more frequently and will be better integrated with other parts of the network, especially at key points like New Lynn Interchange.
  • Over time, ARTA will improve the fares and ticketing system so that you will pay one fare for your entire journey, even if you have to use more than one service to get there.
  • New Lynn will continue to be well connected with other parts of the region by bus.

    Further Information

The projects form part of the overall DART 6 rail corridor project commissioned by Ontrack, which separates the rail corridor through New Lynn from the local roading and pedestrian network via 'grade separation'. This means the rail will run in a wide trench with bridge crossings for roads and pedestrians above. The current single track will be double-tracked as part of the upgrade, allowing faster and more frequent train services on completion.

Fletcher Construction won the tender for the ONTRACK works, and is well underway with the trench formation and civil works.

An island platform will be located within a trench, positioned between Memorial Drive to the west and Hetana Street to the east.

Primary access to the station platform will be via the proposed interchange sited over the trench between Rankin Avenue and Memorial Drive. Bus bays are located to the north and south of the interchange, on Totara Avenue and Clark Street respectively.

The interchange will accommodate facilities including a waiting area, bike racks, public toilets, cleaner and staff facilities. Access from the interchange to the platform will be possible via stairs, lift or escalators. A second stairway located at the eastern end of the platform connects to Hetana Street.
