ARTA aims to continually move Auckland towards the region’s long-term transport goals, as described by the Regional Land Transport Strategy. These must support the Auckland Regional Growth Strategy, which sets out how the Auckland region will accommodate approximately double its existing population over the next 50 years. They must also support the region’s plans for economic growth and development.
Plans that set out what ARTA proposes to do to address the longer-term needs of Auckland’s transport system are:
- The Auckland Land Transport Programme, which is developed annually in partnership with local councils. It sets out the programme and budgets for all transport activities (except state highways) in the Auckland region over the next year. It also forecasts priorities and spending for the next 10 years.
- The Auckland Transport Plan, which unites the region's long-term transport programmes and ultimately ensures the best use of available funding for transport.
- The Passenger Transport Network Plan, which sets out how the region will develop and implement a fully functioning passenger transport network to carry 100 million passengers by 2016.
- The Sustainable Transport Plan, which outlines a programme of projects and practical actions to help Aucklanders make more sustainable travel choices.
- The Regional Arterial Road Plan, which outlines consistent standards and levels of service for arterial roads throughout the region and identify the projects needed to achieve them.
